Culture 2A - HSS_40200_TA : Critical Design

Domaine > Humanities and Social Sciences.

Descriptif

Designers are usually seen as problem solvers. Their function is to make a product better or more beautiful, or to make a process more efficient. But what if, instead of solving problems, they posed them? That is the premise behind Critical Design. The objective is not to design products to be sent out into a slightly uncertain future but rather to imagine how that future might be entirely different. The result is a series of scenarios that help to illuminate moral, ethical, political and aesthetic problems. The course offers a tour through an emerging cultural landscape of design ideas, ideals, and approaches looking at projects through the lens of fine art, design, architecture, cinema, and photography. The course draws on futurology, political theory, the philosophy of technology, and literary fiction.

Objectifs pédagogiques

This is a discussion-based research workshop that emphasizes group and pair work, involving debate, pitching & storytelling.

How might one understand the sophisticated power structures and influential visual forces behind the design of products and systems? It is a way to explore the needs, wants and desires that drive consumer decisions both collectively and individually.

It is also a way to rethink how the sheer speed of our current era serves as an input to an access that invariably leads to an unmitigated output of excess.

From the AI driving architectural firms or Hollywood films, to the socio-economic and political levers behind Big Ag or Big Data, we will cover a series of topics that will create a clearer speculation of what has been, but more importantly, what is to come.

• to explore the research being done currently at MIT Media Lab

• to dive into the innovations of the past and see how design has radically altered over the last 100 years

• to create a group research project on a future scenario (think year 2110) which will include a short video pitch and a visual inspiration ‘process’ image book that shares your ideas

• to look into the future, at uncertain initiatives through the medium of speculative design, critical design, and design fiction

A Few Questions

1) How is society shaped through storytelling?

2) How clear and lucid are you in conveying a message?

3) How aware are you of the societal impact of current governance?
